Cistercian Nuns

Our History

In 1125 Citeaux founded a monastery for pious women who wanted to imitate the austere life of the monks. During this time, many monasteries of nuns had taken over Cistercian usages. The Cistercian Order became the first unified order of monks and nuns. Our form of Cistercian life was brought to the United States  in 1957 when nuns from the Swiss Abbey of Frauenthal, founded our monastery; the first for nuns of our Order in our country.
